A new paper published in Nature suggests the same conditions that created the cracks could have been favorable to microbial life - persistent cycles of wet and dry conditions.

The hexagonal shapes point to a wet-dry cycle that could foster the development of life.

These ancient mud cracks are by no means the first sign of Mars once supporting microbial life, but NASA said the papers findings were yet another sign of how much more evidence there could be for its Curiosity rover to find.
