There are two kinds of hardware presently involved in keeping a close eye on Mars: we have the rovers on the surface (three still active, two American and on Chinese), and the orbiters that spin around the planet (8 still active out of a total of 18 send there). And they all return incredible vistas of a strange place we humans might one day call home.

NASAs Curiosity rover celebrated the 10th anniversary of its launch on November 26 by sending a spectacular postcard from the Red Planet. The rover had captured two black-and-white images of the thrilling Martian landscape while it was perched on the side of Mount Sharp.

The robotic explorer snapped two black and white images of the Martian landscape which were then combined and had colour added to them to produce the remarkable composite.

An artistic interpretation of Curiosity’s view high up on a Martian mountain was created by mission team members who were stunned by the sweeping landscape.

Most humans alive today are never going to go to Mars. Its probably for the best, really.
