HONOLULU, Hawaii (HawaiiNewsNow) - A statewide flash flood watch has been extended into the day Monday as possible localized downpours could lead to flooding in areas that have been soaked over the past week. The National Weather Service extended the watch until 6 p.m. Monday. The threat of widespread heavy rain has diminished. However, there is still enough moisture and lingering instability over the islands that could trigger localized heavy rain, which then could lead to flash flooding.

Homes and roads in the rural areas of Wainiha, Haena and Hanalei were flooded after Kauai got several inches of rain over the last few days. It prompted road closures of Kuhio Highway at the Hanalei Bridge, and also left behind a muddy mess triggering landslides and severe erosion. Kauai Mayor Derek Kawakami signed a disaster declaration Wednesday to free up emergency funds in response to the flooding.
