OUTDOORS COMMENTARY: Have fun fishing high water – but keep an eye on the sky

Maybe after this week the rain will give us a break and hold off for a while. Most of our area lakes are above normal pool; some as much as 4 feet, and others about 2 to 3 feet above normal. The high water wouldn’t be too bad if this was July or August, but not during the spring spawn. I’m sure we had some spawn on Mayse, but I don’t believe it was a full one. Right now, besides being about 4 feet above normal pool, Pat Mayse has water that is heavily stained to muddy. This high ...

Discover Oklahoma: Hooked on fishing? State offers plenty of places to reel em in Dino Lalli © Lori Duckworth/Oklahoma Tourism A fisherman shows off his catch at Lake Eufaula. Fishing for me combines both the elements of excitement and relaxation. A much talked about subject is the “magic” of fishing, too. But that magic also encompasses the excitement when the bait has been taken and the battle begins to get the fish on the boat, yet the allure of those peaceful moments,...

OUTDOORS COMMENTARY: Sandies are schooling; it's fun to be on the water | Lifestyles

You guessed it; more rain and storms and now we have high water levels in most of our area lakes. There is plenty of water flowing at the trailrace behind the Dam at Mayse. I’m not sure what the anglers are catching, but there’s several of them fishing there. The trailrace at Cooper Lake is also flowing, and it’s always fun fishing there. The water color at Mayse is stained to heavy. Sand bass (white bass) are schooling on the surface and hitting just about any lure that looks li...

OUTDOORS COMMENTARY: More rain, higher temperatures mean better bites

According to the weather forecast, we are going to get more rain, but also higher temps. This means, since we are going to get warmer nights, water temps will rise, and when they do, there will be a wave of bass coming to the shallows. We could also see the crappie moving in this week. As a matter of fact, some are already moving in from the 13-foot depth to shallower water. Most of our area lakes still have stained water, but it’s a good color and you can see about 8 to 10 inches, and tha...

STORY TIME WITH REAVIS: Guys and gals, and the differences between them

"Which coffee do you want me to use this morning?” I held up two different blends the War Department had in the kitchen cabinet. She was standing at her unofficial desk at the end of our large kitchen island. Several stacks of paper formed a small barricade between her and my coffee makings. She barely looked up from a piece of mail in her hand. “I don’t care.” Alarm bells went off in my head. There it was, the Female Trap. I was lost, and no matter what response I chose, I...

OUTDOORS COMMENTARY: Time to be on the water – keep a weather watch

Conditions are changing on our lakes for the better, with warm water temps and clearing water in some of them. Male bass are moving around in the shallows trying to find good safe spots to make the beds. The females are staging out in a little deeper water just waiting to do their job. This process of the spawn is faster in the smaller lakes, especially in the protected areas that have cover. Some crappie are also moving back into those protected areas. Even though a lot of our lakes are cleari...
