Ocado was the standout performer of the day as it attempted to rebound after heavy falls the previous session, with financial and mining stocks also putting in a decent performance.

Investec on Friday said it expected to post higher earnings for the first half of the year, boosted by the now-completed merger of its UK wealth and investment business with Rathbones, higher global interest rates and growth in average lending books.

Retail stocks were on the rise on Thursday, after results from both JD Sports Fashion and Next impressed the market, while miners were dragged lower by falling metal prices and Ocado suffered from some profit-taking.

Kingfisher lost more than a tenth of its market value on Tuesday after the DIY retail conglomerate warned shareholders that it would have to scale back profit guidance this year.

C&C Group said in a trading update on Tuesday that it expected its first-half operating profit to fall between €29m to €31m.

Shares in Games Workshop Group surged on Friday after the Warhammer maker said trading for the quarter to August 27 was ahead of expectations, driven by healthy growth across all channels.

London’s FTSE 250 was up 0.1% at 18,554.07 in afternoon trade on Wednesday.

London’s FTSE 100 was flat at 7,476.49 in afternoon trade on Monday.

Corporate and public sector technology provider Computacenter reported total first-half revenue of £3.59bn on Friday, making for a 26.8% increase from the previous year.
