a military center in cairo to check on the situation. finally the just state department offering flights for american citizens who want to get out of egypt and encouraging them to do that. so far no madonna tear evacuations. flights are to start tomorrow. countries like saudi arabia and turkey are doing the same. alexandra is seeing crowds on the river. nick robertson is there for us now. what are you seeing? reporter: a huge crowd of about 5,000 people marching down the road demanding president mubarak step down. this has been a consistent demand. something different from the previous days. the crowd has all stopped in the last couple of minutes at a central square here. men, women and children are all praying on the ground here, praying before they continue their demonstration. this is the first time we have
reporter: well, don, as we re standing here, very close to ta rir square, we were hearing gunfire, an indication of how tense the situation remains here. a lot of people that we have been talking to still reiterating that point that they want to see president mubarak step down. there has also been a fair level of frustration directed at the international community and at the united states because of their failure to openly back the demonstrators demands. they re also frustrated at the fact that they believe that many internationals and the united states believe that in egypt, they i very have to be a mao ba da stile military dictatorship and if that is not going to
tunisia setting it off that forced its long-time president to flee two weeks ago. that inspired egypt and yemen to stage similar protests. this is one of at least four demonstrations today in yemen s capital. thousands taking the the street to demand their president step down after 32 years in office. security was out in force, but there were no reports of violence. in the meantime the tunisians are continuing their push for change. more demonstrations have been held in tunisia since the president was ousted. the demand from activists is for all politicians with links to the old regime to staep step down. that would include the prime minister. the protests have now turned violent. protests in egypt have also been violent. that s not stopping activists from demanding that president mubarak step down. reporter: like their
the president is also keeping an eye on increasingly violent anti-government protest in egypt. a white house statement late last night urged the authorities to respond peacefully though to those protests. so far, though, two demonstrators and a police officer have been killed. alexander marquardt reports now from cairo. reporter: tens of thousands of egyptians have taken to the streets, emboldened and inspired by the recent overthrow of tunisia s president. they have clashed with police, rubber bullets and tear gas have been fired. protesters here on the square in central cairo say they won t leave until their demands are met. their first demand, president mubarak step down. they re also angry about corruption, unemployment, and poverty. the president doesn t know about anything what we re doing. everything is corrupted, everything is polluted. we cannot live anymore like this. reporter: this protest has been organized largely on facebook and twitter, though down here on the squa
