IRCTC asks railways to rethink order allowing its zones to build food plazas on rail land

"There are nearly 300 food plazas under operation by the IRCTC and over 75 more are expected to be finalized in the coming months. Hence, the IRCTC has requested the railways for reconsideration of its decision," IRCTC spokesperson Anand Jha said.  

In an order issued on March 8, the Railway Board gave permission to its 17 zones to use vacant spots at stations for building food plazas.

The zonal railways is conducting reviews of sites for major catering units that have been vacant for one year or more and set up food outlets with provision of local or regional cuisine.  

Indian Railways to open THIS service at stations to generate revenue - Sources indicate that as many as 100-150 such static units are planned to be set up by the zonal railways.
