A spacecraft which was heading for the moon has suffered a critical loss of propellant, the company behind it has said.

The first image beamed back by Astrobotic’s Peregrine spacecraft provides the first visual evidence of a propulsion system anomaly.

The first US-built lunar lander since the days of Apollo is leaking fuel – and it could put the entire mission at risk.

Hopes of Pittsburgh-based space company Astrobotic returning the US to the Moon in February are waning a hit following propulsion issues for its Peregrine

The photo shows a disturbance in some of Peregrine's insulation, which is consistent with a problem in the moon lander's propulsion system.

Astrobotic's Peregrine lunar lander was expected to reach the surface of the moon on Feb. 23. But that goal remains out of reach after the spacecraft's propulsion system malfunctioned.

The Astrobotic Peregrine Mission One lunar lander has fewer than 40 hours before its thrusters run out of fuel and it tumbles through space, Astrobotic said.

Astrobotic's Peregrine lunar lander encountered problems shortly after separating from the rocket that have likely ended its moon-landing ambitions.
