hierarchy of issues. our democracy should be above those okay, but matthew, i didn t ask when [inaudible] you walk into a bar in texas tomorrow night, the guy next to, is he going to be talking about the hearing or gas prices? he s probably going to be talking about the texas rangers are the houston astros, in all likelihood. that s what he s going to be talking about. or hoping the dallas cowboys can somehow put out the season next season, despite all their efforts. that s what they are going to be talking about. but i think it s up to us and i think it s up to leaders of both political parties who stand on principle about what this is about. if they like the cowboys what do you call the cowboys, america s team? about democracy. i don t call them america s team. i m not a cowboys fan. thank you so much for joining us, tonight carlos curbelo, and matthew dowd. i appreciate you being here. coming up, a very timely reminder of what truly is all about. it s not about pol
democracy. so, we ve got to fortify our institutions. but sir, this isn t a trial. what can you do? when everyone saw tonight is as awful as you could possibly imagine. what can the committee recommend because that s what you can do, you can recommend what can you recommend that would prevent another january 6th? we are going to have a very broad series of recommendations. we haven t settled them, all of them, yet. but some of the prominent things that are being discussed our amendments to the electoral count act, to make sure that nobody can nullify the popular vote of the people in the states within the electoral college system. there are those of us who have believed that the electoral college system is itself a danger. and certainly a threat to democratic values. i don t know whether we will be able to get unanimity in the committee around that. but i think everybody should
but they are also a chance for congress to draw a line in the sand, and announced that violence against our democracy will never never be met with silence. now legally, a crime requires two things. it requires criminal intent, and requires a criminal. act and for criminal intent, the men raya was really established today with respect to donald trump. and really powerful ways. donald trump was told repeatedly, he lost the election. he was told by his data people, he was told it by bill barr. their attorney general, and most devastatingly, his own daughter thought so. and said she agreed with bill barr. who called it bullshit, and if bill barr knows about every day he knows about bullshit. and it was the respect of the criminal act was so powerful, when liz cheney showed and went through this and said donald trump never called anyone.
and the former president s daughter and senior adviser to president donald trump. there was also disturbing new footage of the violent attack that took place on the capitol. the committee made out exactly how the hearings will show that this was a culmination of an attempted coup and they say the former president was at the absolute epicenter of it all. here is just some of what we saw. donald trump, the president of the united states, spurred a mob of domestic enemies. of the constitution to march down the capital and subvert democracy. i made it clear that they didn t agree with the idea of saying the lection was stolen, putting out this stuff, i told the president this was bs. i respect attorney general barr. so i accepted what he said, was saying. president trump summoned the mob, assembled the mob, and lit he flame of this attack.
in order to get through yet to get the truth and accountability, and then you can get to a point where we all want, where the country can reconcile. and we can get past this not military civil war that we are in right now at this point. that would happen at the capitol, in my view, is as bad as anything our country has had since the civil war. since the opening shots of the civil war. but i think this virus, or this cancer, has festered in the republican party. son of donald trump went away, it s still a problem. because there is still a majority of the republican party that believes in the big lie. that pushes us more towards autocracy each day. that doesn t seem to have an allegiance to the constitution. in the course of. this we absolutely need to do this, for austerity, we obviously need to do keep an eye on the. ball and our threats to democracy, including this, one and the ongoing threat to our democracy.
