Devon police officers found themselves living out the plot of the 2007 comedy Hot Fuzz after they escorted an injured swan to the vet in the back of their squad car - after it was saved by a drunk.

The swan was wrapped in a blanket by passers-by after concerns it had been hit by a vehicle.

One local who phoned the police to report the wild bird loose in the middle of Plymouth said they had just walked past someone "stroking a swan" on a busy street, home to many of the port citys most popular pubs and bars.

Local residents first reported that there was a police helicopter at around 5:10pm
