Equities investors have an opportunity to enter the market at good valuation as bears depressed prices further last week.
The market, which had gained N148 billion the previous week, shed N603 billion last week following sell pressure that dominated all trading sessions.
The Nigerian Exchange Limited (NGX) All-Share Index (ASI) fell 2.93 per cent to close at 38,324.07, while market closed lower at N19.975 trillion. Year-to-date the market has declined by 4.8 per cent.
Following the growth recorded two weeks ago, analysts at Cordros Securities had envisaged profit-taking last week. A development that led to the decline in prices of 41 stocks, compared to only 26 stocks that appreciated. And analysts said the lower prices offer investors a good opportunity to enter the market.
The stock market attracted N42.142 billion invested in 1.602 billion shares in 19,507 deals last week.
This was an increase of 292 per cent compared with the N10.759 billion staked on 1.263 billion shares in 19,975 deals the previous week. Equally, the NGX All-Share Index rose 1.27 per cent to close higher at 39,301.82.
The rebound in the market could be linked to investors’ renewed appetite for shares boosted by the release of companies’ first quarter (Q1) results.
According to analysts, the floor of the NGX would be flooded with more results this week.
“We expect NGX’s floor to be flooded with results as the Q1-2021 earnings season commences in full swing. We believe investors will be looking for clues on how corporate earnings will evolve in 2021, given the expected improvement in macroeconomic conditions.

The nation’s stock market remained bearish last week leading to a decline of 0.15 per cent in the Nigerian Exchange Limited (NGX) All-Share Index to close at 38,808.01, while market capitalisation ended at N20.310 trillion.
The market had similarly dipped the previous week. However, unlike two weeks ago when the volume and value of trading also decline, investors staked more funds last week.
A total of 1.263 billion shares worth N10.759 billion were traded in 19,975 deals last week, up from 887.037 million shares valued at N9.193 billion that exchanged in 17,837 deals the preceding week.
After the earning season and as the second quarter began recently, investors are said to be realigning their portfolio with eyes on yield movements in the fixed income (FI) market. Also, the nation’s subsisting stagflation environment remains a potent threat to investment returns in the financial market.
