Nagaland facing acute shortage of doctors, says Dr Kuveluzo Chizo

Our Correspondent Kohima, July 8 (EMN): The Nagaland Medical Students’ Association (NMSA) strongly vouch for creation of more posts of MBBS and BDS graduates, and a dental surgeon post in every Primary Health Centre (PHC) and district hospitals, said NMSA president Dr. Kuveluzo Chizo, while citing acute shortage of healthcare personnel in the state. Speaking at the ongoing three-day biennial 24th General Conference of NMSA, which commenced on Friday, Dr. Chizo informed that the doctor to population ratio in Nagaland is a meagre 1:4000, which is one doctor for every 4000 people, against the 1:1000 ration recommended by the WHO. Nagaland Health minister updates progress of 2 upcoming medical colleges in state

Our Correspondent Kohima, June 13 (EMN): Minister of Health and Family Welfare, S Pangnyu Phom on Monday said that some buildings of the much-awaited Nagaland Medical College in Kohima will be handed over to the government before the end of this year, probably in November or December, before making it functional from next academic session (2023). Updating the media on the progress of the college, which is likely to be renamed as Nagaland Institute of Medical Science and Research, the minister reiterated that it is 60% and a total of 60 posts for the faculty have been created. He said that the department has invited a team of experts to inspect the site. Nagaland Medical College to be functional from next academic session

Our Correspondent Kohima, June 9 (EMN): Principal Secretary to the government of Nagaland, Amardeep Singh Bhatia, on Thursday stated that the Nagaland Medical College in Kohima will be functional from the next academic session. He maintained the government has been putting in a lot of effort and the roadmap has been laid down, and they were hopeful to move an application to the National Medical Commission (NMC) by July. He asserted that the NMC would give the necessary permissions. The principal secretary was speaking during a review programme of the Social Health Responsibility campaign, an initiative of Chief Medical Office, Kohima at the Conference Hall of Hotel De Oriental in Kohima. The campaign was held in collaboration with district administration and Association of Municipal Wards Panchayat (AKMWP) and funded by National Urban Health Mission.
