Imagine the U.S. canceling the Fourth of July holiday due to high crime in our cities, and you get a sense of what has occurred in France. Cities across France canceled Bastille Day observances July 14 because of rioting that ignited when a police officer shot and killed 17-year-old Nahel Merzouk, a French citizen of Algerian and Moroccan descent, during a traffic stop in Paris on June 27.
France was recovering from riots which lashed the nation following the killing of Nahel Merzouk, a 17-year-old youth of Moroccan and Algerian descent, by the police at a traffic stop. India refused to comment stating it was an internal matter of France.
It was entirely predictable that when riots erupted in France after 17-year-old Nahel Merzouk was killed by a police officer they would provide another opportunity for the far-right in France and beyo.
