Alabama Slim –
The Parlor (Cornelius Chapel): “The story of a bluesman getting discovered late in life is one that has repeated itself a handful of times over the last few decades. There is a sadness to this story in the fact that talented musicians can toil away most of their life without having their music ever heard and appreciated by anyone outside of their immediate community. But there is also a triumph, a redemption of sorts that comes from this music finally reaching grateful listeners around the world. While visiting bluesman Little Freddie King in New Orleans, Music Maker Relief Foundation founder and president Tim Duffy met his cousin Alabama Slim, born Milton Frazier in Vance, Alabama on March 29, 1939. King and Slim often played together, with King’s scorching guitar backing Slim’s deep and smooth vocals that bring to mind the cool, flowing singing of John Lee Hooker…. In the summer of 2019, Slim and King – along with drummer Ardie Dean – finally found
No Roads (The Garden)
After living through a year that brought a devastating tornado and a deadly global pandemic, rapper Reaux Marquez felt inspired to craft an album that reflected the loss and tumult he and his North Nashville community experienced.
No Roads is an immersive, narrative album, opening with the spoken line, âThe child who is not embraced by the village will burn it down to feel its warmth.â Marquez produced the album himself, and he adds flourishes of jazz, spoken word, R&B and field recordings into his fiery, moody soundscapes, which add color and texture to his versatile flow. To boot, Marquez also assembled a killer lineup of featured artists, including local mainstays like A.B. Eastwood, Jamiah, Namir Blade and Lauren McClinton. BRITTNEY McKENNA

Powerhouse country soul singer/songwriter Nalani Rothrock and her partner-in-life and music, guitarist/songwriter Josh Lamkin have worked hard, and then harder, to push through. “Try” is about perseverance, resilience, love and moving in a positive direction.
Both of the Florida natives got an early start in music. By 12, Rothrock was gigging with her father’s band, and Lamkin’s own father taught him to play guitar when he was six; he performed at his family’s church and was playing professional secular gigs by 15.
The two met nearly a decade ago when they shared a bill: Rothrock was performing with her father and Lamkin was leading his blues band. Soon they were making music together, performing in Florida before moving to Nashville two years ago.
