Inside the context of what looks like a brutal midterm year, there are plenty of reasons to think Democrats might be rallying behind President Joe Biden at the moment.

Even as President Joe Biden celebrates the historic passage of gun control legislation, mass shootings continue to show the limits of the new law.

“Irina flourished and blossomed as a mother,” a close friend said Tuesday at her funeral service in Wilmette.

WASHINGTON -- President Joe Biden welcomed a crowd to the White House lawn Monday to showcase a new law meant to reduce gun violence, celebrating "real progress" after years of inaction. But he also lamented that the country remains "awash in weapons of war" -- with the 16-day-old law already overshadowed by yet another mass shooting.

Irina McCarthy was 35, the youngest person killed. Her husband, Kevin, was 37.

In the wake of a the July 4 mass shooting in Highland Park, Gov. J.B. Pritzker is calling for a ban at both the state and national levels on military-style assault rifles and high-capacity magazines. And a bill pending in the General Assembly would make it a felony to buy or sell assault-style rifles and high-capacity magazines.

"We can make meaningful progress in dealing with gun violence," Mr. Biden said during an event at the White House.
