Alcohol, cell phone use suspected in car crash

ELLSWORTH A Charleston resident crashed his 2007 Toyota pickup while operating under the influence and texting, according to Cpl. Shawn Merchant, who responded to the accident on Nicolin Road on Feb. 20. However, the 38-year-old driver, Guy R. Mitchell, had left the scene 90 minutes earlier.
Mitchell was driving fast, Merchant said, and when he came to a sharp corner overcorrected, sending the truck into a skid. The Toyota then left the road, striking a telephone pole, before Mitchell drove off.
Mitchell was picked up later in Penobscot County and arrested on a charge of operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of an intoxicant. He also was summoned by Ellsworth Police on charges of leaving the scene of a motor vehicle crash and failure to report by quickest means.
