As Nigeria marks World Immunization Week for 2021 celebrated from April 24th – 30th every year, it is important to highlight the use of vaccines in mitigating vaccine preventable diseases (VPDs) and to measure the progress of Nigeria’s journey for self-reliance. According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), the primary objective of the week is to emphasise the value of vaccines in preventing diseases that were hitherto perceived as life-threatening. This World Immunization Week seeks to highlight the importance of vaccines as a “public good that saves lives and protects health” whilst also allowing development. The theme of 2021 is “Vaccines bring us closer”.
