How volunteers are helping rehabilitate cold-stunned sea turtles
Cold stuns typically happen when water temperatures drop below 50 degrees Fahrenheit, causing sea turtles to show signs of hypothermia. Author: Chaffin Mitchell (AccuWeather) Updated: 12:23 PM EST January 25, 2021
It took until the middle of January for true Arctic air to arrive in the United States, but despite a late onset of the harshest cold, aquariums and rehabilitation centers across the country have already been busy responding to hundreds of cold-stunned sea turtles.
Cold stuns typically happen when water temperatures drop below 50 degrees Fahrenheit, causing sea turtles to show signs of hypothermia. Experts say this typically happens in enclosed basins such as estuaries since major bodies of water don t typically cool down that much.

Over 900 stranded sea turtles have been saved from Cape beaches in just the last six weeks.
A couple hundred turtles will come ashore in a typical year, but this year, 720 turtles have received care between the New England Aquarium s animal care center in Quincy and the National Marine Life center in Buzzards Bay since Thanksgiving.
That breaks the all-time record for turtles cared for between the two facilities set in 2014.
These turtles get trapped in Cape Cod Bay as waters north of the bay cool in the fall and it becomes impossible for these cold-blooded animals to swim around Race Point and head south for warmer waters.
