The Smithsonian’s National Zoo announced on Thursday that they are celebrating the birth of a male lesser kudu calf at its Cheetah Conservation Station.
The male lesser kudu calf was born on March 28 and found to be healthy and strong, according to the Zoo’s veterinarians who examined him the next day.
He is the third calf born to his seven-year-old mother
Rogue and 10-year-old father
Kushukuru and
Toba.
Rogue was transferred to the National Zoo from the St. Louis Zoo in Missouri in October 2016 to breed with Garrett, after it was recommended by scientists at the Association of Zoos and Aquariums’ Species Survival Plan (SSP).

Steven Washington, 9, dives faces first into a fresh pile of snow, taking a break from shoveling his grandmother s driveway after school was called off for a snow day Monday, Dec. 12, 2016, on Flint, Mich. s north side. I like to see when the snow falls, he said. I love to play in it and make snow angels. It was so cool to get out of school today so I could just be outside around so much snow. You silly person, you thought that since the kids were sitting at home, glued to their COVID Chromebooks for something like three hours a day that snow days would be a thing of the past.
Snow-Bernie
It was only a matter of time before someone sculpted a snowman inspired by the Inauguration Bernie meme. Glasses: check. Surgical mask: check. Snow mittens: check. Attitude: duh.
It’s DC - of course someone made a Bernie snowman. (H/t my son) pic.twitter.com/4Y3jAbOr1h Patricia Zengerle (@ReutersZengerle) January 31, 2021
The National Guard Snow Troops
With thousands of troops stationed around D.C. following the Jan. 6 insurrection, it s understandable that things can get a little boring during long shifts on the barbed Capitol fence. The troops must need reinforcements, as a few have been spotted on patrol alongside sergeant-like snowmen at the security perimeter. It s unclear whether the guardsmen assembled all of these new troops themselves.
WINTER WONDERLAND Pandas are one of those animals that manage to look adorable even when they re doing something as pedestrian as leaning against a tree while lazily munching on bamboo. But there are special times when their cuteness reaches extreme levels that can only be touched by elite species such as koalas, hedgehogs, sloths and fennec foxes.
Exhibit A for this argument is the video recently shared of a panda family at the Smithsonian s National Zoo. Mei Xiang and Tian Tian are seen frolicking in the snow and teaching their cub, Xiao Qi Ji, how to properly celebrate winter.

A large winter storm is bringing heavy snow, rain and freezing cold temperatures to the east coast, from the Carolinas to Maine. It also brought snow to the nationâs capital for the first time in almost two years.
That means a snow day for Mei Xiang and Tian Tian, giant pandas at the National Zoo in Washington, D.C.
The National Zoo shared a video of the two pandas frolicking, rolling and sliding around their habitat, now covered in a dusting of snow.
