Thank you. In many of the countries where our News Organization operates, this doesnt resonate because the notion of independence doesnt exist in a lot of countries around the world. You know, and particularly for news agencies. I think the standard definition of the news agency in most countries is something that is tied government. And the type of agency that ap and reuters are is sometimes hard for people to comprehend. When i was based in asia, i often had to explain that ap didnt stand for american press. I think intellectual, it is the difference between government and independent but there are countries in which every entity is controlled bit government and whether it is industry for education or media. Thank you. Andrew humphrey, wdiv if detroit michigan and founder of the Journalism Task force. Thank you for being here. My question is, and for all of the panelists, what other loop holes exist now in the law that you can enlighten us on. For example, from the patriot act, is it
I think that is an importantd point. It has auld happened. And will always happen. Gets one thing that is really encouraging even for this room is at least the younger at journalists and the journalists coming from the businesses ivee been meeting are amazingly intrepid and investigative and have tools that we dont have. Theyre really good at using social media. Theyre really good at searchind on the web and figuring out whats going weon. There are people working for vice and all sorts of ll organizations. Theyre doing really exciting work. And i think thats a very positive indication ore the world is heading. Evenfts insightful, some ome organizations, there are so many people out there trying t get that Information That i think its a real positiv tohat s this plays ly omething steai ear. I am almost ashamed i am doing it because i am discriminating. They are trained capable ready. The 1st group they turned over in december ironically they were National Guard prison guards. They could not understand, in the prisons we work in we work with muslim all the time. All sorts of case law that allows exactly what we would be doing with the women. Long story short we are restricted. This all happened around november. One of the military judges lifted the temporary order, but we still have one in the case of some other and i misspoke this morning. So then 15 soldiers in the normal equal opportunity process anyone for any reason if they feel they have been discriminated against can register an eeo complaint and 15 guards did that, seven or seven or eight men and the rest women the the governing document for us is the Army Regulation 600 dash 20. It requires investigation to try to settle the issue. We sent down a one star because the judges are colonels and lieutenant colonels, we
Exclusively into honduras from, dead strips or bits of that land, offload and then take off again or just destroy the airplane. The hondurans with no military help from us some advice and encouragement and started to occupy and move their military command these are very remote areas of honduras moving their military out there. Drug traffickers no that they are there. A a civilian. A us pilot, and chances i am guessing he was on his way i dont know what he was doing. But all of the drug flights come out of venezuela. You alluded you said that the policies are a clear return to cold war tactics. How could that translate into account plantation. Bomber patrols if in fact they happened. Confrontation could escalate not in the midst of an october type of scale another jfk idealist, but on the lower level. I dont think much of all. I think just a nuisance. We watch them come and go. Very little possibility of them having a confrontation with us ships and airplanes because there arent any dow
How president rob is taking steps to get more help to puerto rico faster by waving restrictions and an obscure law about foreign cargo ships. It was a charge the accusation of being slow to react to hurricane. With those charges being leveled at the trump administration, the white house came out swinging. The white house pushback against criticism that its response to Hurricane Maria has been, as one democratic member of congress put it, ineffective and inexcusably slow. Tom bossert saying some news reports are lagging behind. A lot of the reporting is understandably not wrong but dated. Officials insist response efforts are moving as quickly as possible. 10,000 federal workers including 7200 u. S. Military are on the ground there. Threestar general Jeffrey Buchanan has been sent to oversee the response in the hospital ship uss comfort is teaming for puerto rico. Distribution from the island has been a challenge. We had to remove debris, clear land slides. We have done things like air
