Curb food adulteration with an iron hand: PM Sheikh Hasina Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Thursday directed the authorities concerned to curb food adulteration in Bangladesh with an iron hand alongside creating awareness among businesspeople against such offences. “You’ll have to make them [unscrupulous businesspeople] understand about such offences on one hand and curb that with an iron hand on the other. It’s essential to take both measures simultaneously,” she said. The Prime Minister said this while addressing a programme held at Hotel Intercontinental in the city, marking the National Food Safety Day-2021. She joined the event virtually from her official residence Ganabhaban.

The government previously allowed 64 companies to import 171,500 tonnes of rice. Also, the Ministry of Food approved 49 companies to import 174,500 tonnes of rice on Jan 6. In total, the private sector will import 487,000 tonnes of rice.

More rice import to boost reserve Govt okays purchase of 2.5 lakh tonnes; stock falls to 5.32 lakh tonnes In a bid to boost food grain reserve, the Cabinet Committee on Government Purchase yesterday approved a proposal for procuring 2.5 lakh tonnes of rice. The price of rice is soaring in both retail and wholesale markets at a time when the government s rice reserve has gone down to 5.32 lakh tonnes as of January 4. According to the food ministry, the total reserve of food grain was 7.27 lakh tonnes 5.32 lakh tonnes of rice and 1.95 lakh tonnes of wheat as of January 4, down from 13.83 lakh tonnes at the same time last year.
