MANILA - The House of Representatives on Tuesday approved on second reading a measure promoting, protecting, and conserving the country's indigenous and traditional writing systems. The chamber passed through voice vote House Bill 10657, or the proposed "Philippine Indigenous and Traditional Writing Systems Act", which is primarily authored by Speaker Lord Allan Velasco. The bill aims to promote patriotism among the citizenry by inculcating, propagating, and conserving the cultural heritage and treasures of the country. It would require the Department of Education (DepEd) and Commission on Higher Education (CHED) to include writing systems in relevant subjects of basic and higher education curricula, as well as to create an elective or specialized course in higher education.
