Negaunee plans to enhance lighting on Iron Ore Heritage Trail

ABC 10/CW5 The Negaunee portion of the Iron Ore Heritage Trail is getting a little brighter. The Negaunee City Council has approved Phase 1 in the City of Negaunee IOHT Lighting Enhancement Project, which will install 13 new lighting fixtures along the trail, along with 3000 feet of underground electrical conduit. “This lighting project means a lot to the community,” said Negaunee City Manager Nate Heffron. “It’s going to open up a lot of opportunities for our residents and visitors alike to be able to take advantage of the trails in different ways they haven’t before, especially when it gets dark.”

Journal staff NEGAUNEE –The Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development has awarded the city of Negaunee a grant for $82,600. This grant funding will be used to upgrade the Negaunee beach area with guidance from Michigan State University’s Teal Lake Shoreline Climate and Health Adaptation Vision project, a visioning project that was completed in July. The upgrades will include expanding the beach area to nearly double the sandy area, as well as relocating the piping from the street surface storm water system further into the lake and installing a mat and ramp to make the beach accessible by wheelchair.

(Journal file photo) NEGAUNEE The city of Negaunee announced it will file a lawsuit seeking reimbursement for its demolition of the Kirkwood Building. The Negaunee City Council voted unanimously at a recent meeting to direct the city’s attorney to file suit against the owner of the former Kirkwood Building property located at 324 Iron St. in downtown Negaunee, according to a news release from city officials. In the spring of 2019, the Kirkwood Building suffered from a roof collapse that caused the third-level floor to “crash through to the basement,” city officials said.
