Dedicated on march 17, 1941, the National Gallery of art was a gift to the American People from financier Andrew Mellon who served as treasury secretary from 1921 until 1930 1932. Up next, we visit the museum to learn about early american portrait painting and the work of John Singleton copley. Dianne hello. We are standing in a room full of portraits, and i think that we can think back to 1917. He said, you see these portraits and you expect answers. I dont think i could put it better than that. Let me give you background. Early painters, without much backward without much training made ambitious, but two captureperts portraits on canvas and this was the most important type of painting in the colonies. There is a great flourishing of portrait activity that became elevated to the level
Sarah polk was very up on diplomacy, and her strong suit happened to be intelligent political discussion. She made no bones about the fact that she took an interest in politics. And that she wants her husbands partner. She grew up in a political household in tennessee. She grew up loving politics. She married him after he won a seat in the legislature. Unfortunately for james polk, he died three months after leaving the white house. A sarah began a 42year widowhood. Polk made a shrine to her husband. She lived there for many years on her own and during the civil war, generals on both sides would calm and visit her to pay their respects to her. Some very interesting commentary on what a beloved status she still held. She was earnest about her husbands work. She went through an arduous journey. Talk about a superpowerful woman that really helped shape the founding of the the republic so i myself am a all scholar and i have been working on the project that ive been doing for about three years and i will have a chapter coming out in an edited volume thats going to be published by the university of virginia, press in january 2022.
