Shoplifting with impunity is killing the city’s bodegas, drugstores, and other small shops (except the illegal pot shops, sigh), and plaguing higher-end biz as well.

A group repping thousands of New York City's independent grocers demanded Tuesday that state legislators pass new laws cracking down on shoplifting including locking up thieves who assault retail workers.

A group representing over 4,000 grocers in New York City have asked the legislature to pass more laws on those who repeatedly shoplift and want those who assault employees locked up, according to the New York Post.

The business-oriented organizations are backing the Collective Action to Protect our Stores, or CAPS, coalition, a group of store owners and workers lobbying for legislation that would make assaulting a retail employee or shop owner a violent felony and bail-eligible offense as well as two other measures aimed at protecting workers and preventing thefts.
