Bats infected with deadly disease found at Ipswich school

Premium Content Subscriber only TWO flying foxes infected with a virus which can be fatal to humans were found in and near an Ipswich state school before they died. West Moreton Health says in the past fortnight two flying foxes which later tested positive for Australian Bat Lyssavirus were located around Ipswich Central State School. West Moreton Public Health physician Dr Candice Colbran said an ABLV infection can be fatal to humans and anyone who could have had contact with either animal should immediately present to a doctor or an emergency department. Letter sent to Ipswich Central State School parents.

Here are the top stories from across Ipswich this week

Premium Content Subscriber only AS WE breathe a collective sigh of relief now that we don’t have to wear masks anymore – or at least for the time being – it is time to look at this week’s Ipswich headlines. IT HAS been another week of unfolding drama regarding our former mayors. Andrew Antoniolli, a redeemed man after his fraud convictions were overturned late last year, faces further legal concerns following this week’s news that an appeal has been lodged. Neither side is able to make further comment on this ongoing case for obvious reasons, so it appears we will have to hold fire until we hear more details of the appeal in court.

Council addresses Nerima Gardens closure amid bat problem

A LARGE amount of bats congregating in the one area has forced parts of Nerima Gardens at Queens Park to temporarily close. Ipswich City Council said on Monday it was not the animals themselves which posed a possible risk to public safety. It was, however, the possibility of a tree branch collapsing on public pathways within the Gardens that prompted council action. Temporary closures are in place for some pathways at the Nerima Gardens, Queens Park. If contracted by a human the disease could prove fatal. The discovery in early December has since led many to speculate online that the latest closure to take place was somehow related.

Bat infected with disease deadly to humans found in park

Premium Content Subscriber only A FLYING fox which tested positive for a disease which can be fatal to humans was found in an Ipswich park before it died. West Moreton Health confirmed the animal was recovered from Queens Park and later tested positive for Australian Bat Lyssavirus. It was found on the ground between the carpark and the main gate of the Nerima Gardens on the morning of December 8. The gardens have hosted the popular Christmas Wonderland lights display since December 11. According to the New South Wales Department of Health, only three cases of human infection with ABLV have been recorded since the virus was first identified in 1996.
