The Texas Commissioner of Education stopped by the state’s largest school district on Tuesday, nearly a year after he announced the takeover of Houston ISD. He toured Kashmere High School, one of the first campuses to enter the reform program. 

24 Houston ISD schools have the option to apply for the New Education System, the sweeping reform program created by state-appointed superintendent Mike Miles. By August, NES could expand to, at most, 125 schools — almost half the district. 

Students in Houston ISD are almost halfway through the first school year under state-appointed leadership. On some campuses, a sweeping reform program has completely transformed the typical school day. It’s not working for all students.
