Congress where i played a role in the founding of the Homeland Security department. I call myself one of its grand mothers. One of its grandfathers that would be thad allen, or i think hes one of the grandfathers, im not sure, is on the call with me and the rest of you children are the successors and i think that it is really wonderful today that we are having i guess hes been phone now, a lot of zoom issues, with chris and a panel organized by meg king who heads our science, technology and Innovation Program and a number of a rest of you on the phone. The topic is whats critical, evolving the security playbook for managing ones, zeros and everything in between. While its not as much fun to see you all or some of you on line, chris is on the phone, its not as much fun to see you in person. If any group could make a conversation interesting its our science, technology and information program. Today were joined by the nations chief risk officer chris krebs, director of the department of
Misdirection play. Yet the entire episode was like a big play action fake with you, the audience, being the one that got faked out. That goes a long way toward explaining why we had such a terrific rally today since the fed told us it was keeping rates the same. With the dow gaining another 99 points, s p climbing 0. 65 . And the nasdaq falling to a record close, 0. 84 . Todays move wiped out all the losses from whats historically been the nastiest month of the year. Giving only six more trading days in september to get through, we might end this miserable month higher. Why do i think all the hammering over the fed was one by cue buky show . First theres the pregame leading up to the decision. Going into the fed meeting there was a plethora of bets placed statements made which were widely view the as evidence we could get a september surprise. And out of nowhere a lightning bolt of a rate hike that could really send stocks tumbling. We heard all about this dire possibility. Then the mo
Care and critical infrastructure. Soon it will be where your refrigerator is and things you wear in your car. Ouruse we have connected whole lives, the people who would do is home harm, that is where they come. For our children, as secrets, our infrastructure. It cuts across every responsibility that the fbi has. I was in indiana and someone was responding reminding me of the great vector change of the last century. It was the combination of the automobile, which introduced a new kind of crime to this country. Criminals can travel very quickly. It was important to have a National Resource to respond to that. I was reminded of it while they were talking to me about John Dillinger. I said in response, John Dillinger could not do 1000 robberies in the aim day in all 50 states in his pajamas halfway around the world. That is the challenge we now face. It is a internet, challenge that we are trying very hard to respond to and attract and retrain great people and given the technology they ne

But before we do what i want to talk about is another transition thats been occurring and thats directly related, and thats the transition of our networks from copper to fiber. Of course its generally understood today Everybody Knows that fiber to the home is the best Broadband Network possible and one that many are striving to obtain. When verizon started to roll this out ten years ago it wasnt so obvious and we got a lot of questions about why we were doing this. Who needs 30 megabits per second . But Everybody Knows today that we need much more than that which is why were now up to 500 per second over the fiber and much more to come. So fiber is an important part of the i. P. Transition and a basis for the i. P. Transition. But the transition of voice from copper to fiber doesnt depend on i. P. And thats what i wanted to talk about for a few minutes. So fiber started in the Telephone Network many years ago. There ar
