PORTSMOUTH Participants in an Open Democracy NH march and rally Saturday celebrated the 50th anniversary of the 26th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, and advocated for passage of the federal For the People Act. Our rally every year is held around Independence Day and the message is usually to get big money out of politics, said Olivia Zink, executive director of Open Democracy NH. This year is the 50th anniversary of the 26th Amendment, which gave 18-year-olds the right to vote, so we thought it worthy of celebration. We also want people to know about, and support . the For the People Act, which will protect that right and the rights of all to vote, without adding more restrictions.

Dozens spoke about their personal experiences and loss in dealing with mental health, houselessness and substance abuse, calling on councilors to think about how some of these tragic stories would be different if they had proper access to mental health counselors.
They asked the City Council to consider filling current vacancies in the Police Department with mental health specialists and recovery coaches instead.
