The living room. The hallway.
Platt, who grew up with his mother in London, says she really loved Ireland, especially as the Irish âarenât bothered by classâ. âWhen I was young she had no boyfriends; she didnât want a man in her life as so many of them had let her down. The only one she had was later on, and he was an Irishman called Jimmy.â
The third bedroom in the pristine cottage is now Plattâs home office. Though engaged as a business consultant, he has taken the past year off to comply with a request in his motherâs will: âThat my son Seymour will endeavour to tell the truth about my life.â
The open-plan kitchen-dining and living area.
A set of steps takes you down to a large, open-plan kitchen, living-diner, a sizeable space that spans the width of the property and feels even loftier thanks to its vaulted, timber-clad, ceiling. Between the drawing room and the kitchen is a guest wc, separate shower room, where glass blocks face out to the hall and a second sitting room.
This snug space, which has a far lower ceiling height, does not have a window but rather glass blocks bringing light into the internal space from the kitchen.
From the kitchen, large sliding glass doors open out to the garden which, while northeast facing, gets good light for much of the day as the surrounding properties are all low-build so there is little overshadowing.

Garden
Today it is in turnkey condition and behind the redbrick façade are bright high-end interiors. Inside the front door lies a spacious open-plan livingroom, which in turn leads to the eat-in kitchen. A large window set into the roof over the white marble island bounces lots of light into this space, as do the double sliding doors that open out on to the garden.
Upstairs are two bedrooms, and the principal has lovely features including a vaulted ceiling and round window, which is also found in the generous bathroom.
To the rear is a small courtyard garden which benefits from a southerly orientation. The tall cherry blossoms from next door give the appearance of greater lushness and are particularly lovely when viewed from the bathroom upstairs.
The kitchen
Many other improvements had been made to the semi-detached property by the current owner before that, not least restoring ceilings and other period details, and most strikingly building a two-car garage to the side, detached and finished in cut-stone granite, with a slated, pitched roof reminiscent of an old coach house. As it seems wasted on cars â and there is ample parking for several to the front of the house â new owners might consider converting this lovely little building for other uses, a home office maybe, studio or guest accommodation, subject to planning.
Upstairs there are three very large bedrooms â the fourth bedroom is down at garden level â as well as a shower room and a separate bathroom. While new owners might consider the addition of an en suite, the proportions of the rooms with their period features are lovely left intact. High ceilings are a feature of this house on all three levels.
