An early Antarctic expeditioner who played a crucial role in New Zealand’s early polar research has been recognised in the 2021 New Years Honours, almost 65 years after his first trip to the frozen continent. Eugene Brian Fitzgerald, more commonly known as Brian, was awarded the New Zealand Antarctic Medal for his services to Antarctic exploration and heritage through his summer surveying work from 1957 to 1959, and for the two books he wrote about his expeditions decades later.
