Newark City Schools close Thursday after COVID-19 vaccine Wednesday

Newark Advocate Newark City Schools was forced to cancel classes on Thursday, a day after many of the staff received the second COVID-19 vaccine. According to a tweet from the district, Newark schools closed Thursday because of a staffing shortage. District spokesman Seth Roy said roughly 550 staff members got the second dose of the vaccine on Wednesday. While he didn t have an exact number, he said enough staff called off work that it was not possible to hold classes. Roy noted that in previous years when staff called off, the district had the option of combining classrooms. With COVID-19 protocols in place, such actions can t happen this year.

Licking County teachers receive You Made A Difference awards

Newark Advocate NEWARK - COVID-19 has had a major effect on the 2020-21 school year, for students, educators and parents alike. The pandemic has forced an adaptive learning environment, which has created challenges. But teachers have risen up and still positively impacted their students, sometimes in ways they don t even realize. For the 22nd consecutive year, the Coughlin Automotive Group has decided to honor some of those teachers with its You Made A Difference awards. To date, Coughlin has provided over $140,000 for the awards program, which honors a teacher in each of Licking County s 10 public school districts, plus C-TEC, Licking County Educational Service Center and Newark Catholic.

Her new $2 million gift supports Literacy Collaborative, the college’s comprehensive school literacy model for grades K-8.  The Literacy Collaborative is a nonprofit venture designed to lift the expertise of teachers and help them fulfill their dreams for their students.
