Suspect accused of punching Luce County deputy jailed

NEWBERRY, MI    The suspect in a Luce County officer-involved shooting has been arrested on a number of charges. Early Wednesday morning a deputy was questioning a driver at the Newberry Water and Light Plant when the driver reached into his pocket. The deputy reached into the vehicle and tried to stop the suspect, who hit the officer on the face several times and sped off. The deputy was dragged a short distance. He pulled his gun and shot at the driver, who took off. The suspect was later found and apprehended. State Police from the Sault Ste. Marie Post say the suspect was not injured, but the deputy sustained minor injuries.

ABC 10/CW5 A Luce County Deputy suffered minor injuries after he was dragged with a car during a traffic stop Tuesday morning. The deputy was investigating a possible breaking and entering at the Newberry Water and Light Plant. He stopped a suspicious vehicle in the area. Police say the driver refused to provide proper i.d. or vehicle information. He assaulted the deputy, striking him in the face several times. The vehicle sped off with the deputy still partially inside. In the course of the incident, Michigan State Police say the deputy also drew and discharged his firearm. The suspect was not hurt and was later caught.
