Mailbag: Proposed signs at Triangle Square do not deserve exemption from existing ordinance

Print I’m responding to the “Clearing up misconceptions” commentary about the Triangle Square LED billboard sign proposal. Reading owner Tyler Mateen’s commentary, I feel he hasn’t heard the concerns of Costa Mesa residents and businesses. He never addressed the current traffic flow issues and safety concerns brought on by the distraction of flashing signs. The sign proposal would allow the mall to bypass a city ordinance prohibiting such displays. Asking for an exception was arrogant and is one-sided in the mall’s favor, along with the proposal to not pay the city for three years, craft a 60-plus-year agreement (longer than a mortgage and most marriages) and allow third-party advertising that will only hurt the tenants there and confuse drivers.

Huntington Beach City Council denounces white supremacy

Print The Huntington Beach City Council late Monday denounced hate speech and white supremacy, less than 48 hours after Ku Klux Klan fliers were found in the downtown area. The fliers showed up in a block of 18th Street on Easter morning, police said, and were promoting a “White Lives Matter” rally planned for the Huntington Beach Pier the following Sunday. Tension has been building since word of the rally surfaced last week, when similar fliers promoting the KKK were distributed in the Newport Heights area of Newport Beach. On Monday afternoon, Huntington Beach Mayor Kim Carr released a statement denouncing the fliers as “a cowardly attempt to drum up support for a hateful cause that is in direct contradiction to Huntington Beach’s values of integrity, respect and inclusivity.”

Pro-Diversity Rally to Counter KKK-Promoted White Lives Matter Event in California

Pro-Diversity Rally to Counter KKK-Promoted White Lives Matter Event in California On 4/7/21 at 8:05 AM EDT Huntington Beach council in California has voted to support an official event to counter a White Lives Matter rally due to take place in the city. The proposal won unanimous 7-0 approval as council members expressed concerns about the white supremacist rally planned for April 11 at Huntington Beach Pier. The rally is one of a number being discussed online by hate groups and far-right extremists, all said to be taking place at 1 p.m. on April 11 in cities and states across the U.S. Many of the proposed events have minimal details or support, with the Huntington Beach rally one of the few that has a named location. A channel for the event has been set up on the encrypted messaging app Telegram. The channel has just 100 subscribers, however, and no comments from people saying they will attend.

Trial continues for man accused in 2015 slaying of 81-year-old Newport Beach man

After delays due to exposures to COVID-19 while in custody, the retrial of Carson City man Anthony Thomas Garcia resumed at the Central Justice Center in Santa Ana on Monday afternoon. Garcia, 62, is charged with murder and a special circumstances allegation of murder for financial gain in the death of Newport Beach resident Abelardo “Abby” Estacion, 81, in 2015. If convicted, Garcia could face life in prison without the possibility of parole. Estacion was found dead on April 11, 2015. Investigators said someone entered his 16th Street home early in the morning and killed Estacion in his bedroom while his live-in caretaker slept upstairs. The caretaker went downstairs in the morning to make breakfast and discovered Estacion’s body in bed with a bloodied face.
