War Magician, which will be directed by
Jurassic World’s Colin Trevorrow. Cumberbatch plays Jasper Maskelyne, a real life British magician who reportedly used his illusions to help fight the Nazis during World War II. The film is written by Nicholas Mariani and based on a book by David Fisher. Deadline broke the news.
According to that report,
War Magician follows not just Maskelyne, but also an “international ‘magic gang’ from Africa, Europe, and the Middle East who conspired with Maskelyne and a female military intelligence officer to defeat the Nazis.” That makes it sound like a little bit more than just a traditional World War II drama.
Benedict Cumberbatch is going from Sorcerer Supreme to
War Magician. The actor will star in the new film from
Jurassic World director
Colin Trevorrow, based on the true-ish story of Jasper Maskelyne, a world-famous magician and illusionist who used his stage skills to help the British Army during World War II. The story was turned into a book by David Fisher.
Deadline has the scoop on
War Magician, a new film from director Colin Trevorrow that will star Benedict Cumberbatch. The film is based on the story of “Jasper Maskelyne, a British illusionist who used magic to defeat Erwin Rommel in World War II.” Deadline adds that “Trevorrow’s take features an international ‘magic gang’ from Africa, Europe and the Middle East who conspired with Maskelyne and a female military intelligence officer to defeat the Nazis.”
Clearly not content with being the Sorcerer Supreme in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Benedict Cumberbatch has been attached since 2015 to a story of magic and mayhem that s based in our world called
The War Magician. And that project is now moving forward, with Colin Trevorrow agreeing to direct the movie.
Nicholas Mariani is the current writer on board to adapt David Fisher s book. It chronicles the story of real-life magician and illusionist Jasper Maskelyne, who, along with a group of colleagues dubbed The Magic Gang, became an integral part of a unit focused on the action along the Suez Canal in World War II. He devised ingenious – and very large scale – illusion systems that virtually made tanks invisible from the air, hid whole buildings full of ammunition and supplies, and even made an entire city vanish and reappear several miles away.

It’s true. Benedict Cumberbatch is getting into magic again. But unlike the other times the Sorcerer Supreme has dazzled us with fascinating illusions, his new project will be much more serious than we’re used to.
