El Güegüense 5 Year Aniversario – halfwheel

Release Date: September 2020 Number of Cigars Smoked For Review: 3 The first thing I notice is that the cigar appears to have a triple cap, which isn’t a common sight on figurado vitolas. Two of the three samples have slightly darker feet, I’m not sure if that’s an intentional feature or just a coincidence. I really like the way the band helps to bring out some of the reddish colors in the wrapper. Once removed from the cellophane, the cigar smells a bit like an old room filled with leather; there’s also barnyard, creaminess and some sweetness. The foot is much sweeter thanks to some aromas that smell like dark rum, though there’s also a bit of brown mustard from the bottom of the cigar. I’m surprised to find the cold draws to be a bit tight, but I pick up lots of banana nut bread over mustard, raisins and a bit of watered down lemonade.

The Wise Man Maduro Firecracker Slated for June – halfwheel

The Wise Man Maduro Firecracker Slated for June United Cigar Group has announced that The Wise Man Maduro Firecracker from Foundation Cigar Co. will be the newest addition to its annual summertime limited edition series. Like other cigars in the line, it is being released in a compact vitola, this one measuring just 3 1/2 inches long with a 50 ring gauge. It features a Mexican San Andrés maduro wrapper, a Nicaraguan corojo binder grown in the Jalapa region, and Nicaraguan fillers from Jalapa and Estelí. The cigar is made at Tabacos Valle de Jalapa S.A. in Nicaragua. “This was a fun project to be a part of,” said Nicholas Melillo of Foundation Cigar Co. via a press release. “Fitting the depth of The Wise Man Maduro into a 3 1/2″ vitola was a challenge but what a flavor bomb it is.”

The Tabernacle David – halfwheel

Release Date: October 2020 Number of Cigars Smoked For Review: 3 My eye starts by being drawn to the sun on the band, as it is the brightest spot on the entire cigar, and it seems as if from there things progressively get darker including the black background of the bands and the very dark Connecticut broadleaf wrapper. The wrapper leaf is fairly toothy, while veins are noticeable but largely obscured by the bands. With the bands removed from the cigar, the wrapper shows a more rustic look due to a bit of mottling and a more complete look at the vein structure. Two of the samples are rolled rather firmly while the third is bit softer in general as well as in specific spots. All are without any visual issues, though there is a stray glue spot or two on the foot, which has the visible seams of a wrap or two of tobacco as part of its construction. The wrapper has a bit of earthy sweetness, reminding me a bit of being around a blackberry bush but without the vegetal aspect. Beyond tha
