The 2021 lacrosse season is spiraling on the No. 11 Syracuse Orange. Three loses in four, two of them by a combined 19 goals at home. Injuries. Suspensions. A 5-4 record and needing one win in the last two to ensure a postseason berth (unless they find a replacement for Utah). Unfortunately, the setup for Saturday doesn’t appear any rosier, as the Orange take a trip down to Charlottesville to face yet another highly ranked ACC team, the No. 5 Virginia Cavaliers. There is no relief for the downtrodden in this conference. There is no sympathy, nor is there pity.

No. 11 Syracuse (5-4, 1-3 Atlantic Coast) will visit No. 5 Virginia (10-3, 2-3) on Saturday, facing the only ACC program it has defeated this year. The Orange’s 20-10 victory against the Cavaliers in late February was the largest margin of victory between the two squads.
Syracuse has lost three of its last four games, and its struggles in ACC play were highlighted in a 21-9 thrashing at the hands of North Carolina this weekend. To compound problems, the Orange suspended No. 22 Chase Scanlan this week and will likely miss starting defender Nick DiPietro and short-stick defensive midfielder Brandon Aviles.

Syracuse, N.Y. The Syracuse men’s lacrosse depth has taken another hit with the loss of midfielder Jacob Buttermore for Saturday’s game at Virginia, and perhaps much longer than that.
Orange head coach John Desko confirmed Buttermore suffered an injury at practice this week, but did not provide specifics. Desko said more will be known about Buttermore’s ailment next week.

Duke took down Virginia in overtime on Thursday. Manhattan, Delaware and Georgetown all won in extra time. Mac O’Keefe is now the career goals leader in DI lacrosse. The Heels rolled the Orange out of the Carrier Dome. Saint Joe s, Delaware and Towson all won vital games.
I was able to watch Michigan at Penn State on Friday night. While it wasn’t the prettiest game you’ll ever see especially on the defensive side of the ball the compete level was high, as both teams let if fly. Mac O Keefe eclipsed the all-time career goal-scoring mark on a sidearm riser that pinged a corner and eventually bagged the golden goal in overtime. To see the Nittany Lions celebrate the win after a difficult campaign was a great reminder: keep battling. All victories, whether big or small, are significant.
