The Union Health Ministry has confirmed that the two people who recently died in Kerala s Kozhikode due to “unnatural fever” were infected by the Nipah virus.
According to Dr Sabine Kapasi, public health expert, United Nations, there is no definitive treatment available for Nipah virus making prevention paramount in minimising the risk.
The first outbreak of Nipah was in 1999 in Malaysia and Singapore. The town in Malaysia where the initial outbreak took place bears the virus's name. The Nipah virus is closely linked to the Hendra virus and is a member of the Paramyxoviridae family.
