Hiroshima mayor Kazumi Matsui placed a list of the victims in a cenotaph. It contains the names of about 6500 people who died over the past year. More than 290,000 people are now honored in the vault. Representatives of 68 countries took part in the ceremony. U. S. Ambassador Caroline Kennedy attended for the first time.
