today the nation is shaken by new disturbing details on the report of the killing of 19 children and two teachers in uvalde, texas. reactions are pouring in, and the horrifying question is could more lives have been saved? there s a little girl named maya zamora. she received five gunshots to her upper totorso. she s still in the hospital after 20 surgeries. she s a miracle baby. she had two that had single gunshot wounds. they likely bled out five, ten, 15 minutes earlier. who is to say who could have survived and who couldn t have. rosa flores is live for us in uvalde. rosa, one of the most maddening details from this report is the amount of law enforcement on the scene, nearly 400, and no one was in charge. what more are we learning? reporter: let me show you and tell you about those failures, because at 11:28 a.m., this is the area where the gunman crashed his vehicle. then he jumped over this fence. this is the fence where he threw the gun, threw the backpack, and

president donald trump. good morning. welcome to morning joe. it is thursday, august 25th. i m willie geist. with us, msnbc contributor mike barnicle. former aide to the george w. bush white house and state departments, elise jordan. the president of the national action network and host of politics nation, reverend al sharpton. and white house editor for politico, sam stein. let s dive into the story that has everybody talking right now. 43 million people in line to have at least a chunk of their student loan debt erased. as many as 20 million people could clear all of their student debt. those are the figures from the white house following an executive action yesterday by president biden. the president pushed back at criticism that debt cancellation will make inflation worse. by resuming student loan payments at the same time as we provide targeted relief, we re taking an economically responsible course. as a consequence, about $50 billion a year will start coming
we re also fixing what s called this has been the bane of driving me crazy when i was out of office the public service loan forgiveness program. this program forgives student loans to encourage those students who had those loans if they go into public service. think of the millions who are. public school teachers, local police officers, workers at local charities, members of the military and the national guard, and so many more. think of the folks who work for federal, state, local, governments keeping essential services going, responding to natural disasters, firefighters and cops, the program is designed so that if you serve in one of these jobs, you will be able to list those, accurately assess whether you do, and make your loan payments for ten years, even if it s not consecutive years your remaining balance will be forgiven. it s a great idea but the program is a mess. so inefficient and complicated too many people give up. think of a service member that defers their
