The Santaco-Western Cape minibus taxi strike and associated violence had a devastating effect on teaching and learning in the Western Cape.

9 508 teachers and staff members have been unable to attend return to school since the start of the strike in the Western Cape

As desperate commuters climb through bus windows to hitch a ride or are forced to walk for kilometres, the taxi strike is also affecting healthcare, schooling and other services in parts of the Western Cape.

The school - which caters to over 400 pupils living with disabilities said the lack of teaching staff able to teach sign language has made it difficult for them to communicate with pupils who cannot speak, or those who have difficulties with verbal communication.

The Noluthando Sheltered Employment Trust (NSET) facility has opened at the Noluthando School for Special Needs in Khayelitsha.

With the barriers that people with special needs often face, a facility such as The Noluthando Sheltered Employment Trust will provide students with the opportunity to learn and grow so that they could eventually fully participate in society.
