North Collier firefighters build playground for 4-year-old cancer survivor Published: April 13, 2021 4:32 PM EDT Updated: April 13, 2021 4:57 PM EDT Recommended Adrian Cruz may only be four years old but he already knows what he wants to do as an adult. Adrian wants to be a firefighter and members of the North Collier Fire Department are helping him achieve that by building him a new playground. Adrian has spent half his life battling leukemia. Doctors declared him cancer-free in December. To say that Adrian likes firefighters would be an understatement. “I just know that was his first word. Firefighters,” said Nicole Cruz, Adrian’s mom.

Collier County Sheriff s Office rescues kayaking tourists trapped in the Everglades

Firefighters and Collier County Sheriff’s deputies hoisted a New York couple to safety Monday night after the couple got lost while kayaking during a day trip in the Everglades. The Collier County Sheriff’s Office’s Aviation Bureau was called to help locate the couple, who were unable to find their way out of the muddy backwaters after taking a wrong turn. The couple, both 67, told deputies they were on vacation from New York. Around 9:30 a.m., they rented two kayaks from an Everglades City business and were dropped off at the Turner River Canoe Launch on US-41 East near Turner River Road. They were given maps and guidance for their solo trip.
