Be vigilant: Increase in utility scams reported

The classic utility scam typically involves a caller threatening to disconnect a customerâs electric or gas service because of an unpaid bill and demanding immediate payment. In the case of a Plainville-based company, scammers posing as Eversource have continued to target them â threatening to shut off power unless an immediate payment was made.
âWe get scam calls all the time. Last month alone we got multiple calls threatening to disconnect our power,â said Kim Masse of Northeast Garage Door Systems, LLC. âThey have been robocalls telling us to âpress 1 to pay.â I went online to insure my Eversource bill was correct and I contacted a company representative. I even called the robocall number back and got a recording that it was an unworkable number. I hope my story helps other businesses identify the red flags so

Kim Masse of Northeast Garage Door Systems is used to getting telephone scammers calling her Plainville business on a regular basis.
But Masse said she got multiple calls last month from people claiming to be from Eversource Energy, saying her electricity would be disconnected if she didn’t pay immediately.

A recent case involved an area company that received a call from scammers posing as Eversource and have continued to receive threatening calls to shut off power unless an immediate payment was made.
