Northern elites and Asaba Declaration The Punch

The sudden unexpected kick by some Northern elites against the patriotic resolutions passed last week at a meeting held in Asaba by the 17 Southern governors is quite worrisome, but definitely uncalled for. The kick is illegal, unconstitutional and even immoral. I have since termed the Asaba resolutions the “Accord Concordiale” .The sudden hoopla and ruckus seem to suggest that these few vocal elements are suddenly scared of certain manifold effects that the unanimous resolutions by the All Progressives Congress, Peoples Democratic Party, Bini, Anioma, Yoruba, Igbo, Ijaw, Ikwerre, Ibibio and Efik leading lights may throw up.

“There is also lack of institutional and legal framework for the management of internally displaced population in Nigeria, insufficient or absence of inter-agency collaboration which mostly results in agencies working at cross purposes with duplicative activities.
A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Senator Ayo Arise, on Tuesday called on the Federal Government to allow Nigerians to bear arms.
Speaking during an interview on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily, the lawmaker said no amount of police protection can ensure Nigerians’ safety.
The lawmaker explained that the security challenges can be curbed if citizens are allowed to bear arms.
“When you look at the quantum of ammunition, 350 million; where do we start from; we have such porous borders; people can come in from anywhere, and of course there have been agitations. I am one of those who think that Nigeria should allow people to bear arms,” he said.
