Working in Warwick I could easily find two-bedroom units/houses around the $250-300 mark. Comparatively, in Lismore the average rental is $400 per week according to April realestate.com.au statistics. Friends living in the heart of Brisbane barely pay more at a $450 per week in rent on average. And that is if you can find a rental to begin with. As of this week, my property search narrows to 10 places I could hypothetically afford.

At Thursday nightâs meeting councillors voted unanimously in favour of declaring the local government area was experiencing an extreme situation with respect to lack of housing availability and affordability in our community.
Mayor Chris Cherry brought forward the motion, citing a previous study which showed the Tweed Shire to be the eighth least affordable place for youth to live in the world and further studies showing 35 per cent of the community lived on low to very low income.
âIâve got people coming to us talking about how theyâre middle income families and canât afford to live in our shire,â Cr Cherry said.
Premium Content The Byron Shire s hopes to rein in holiday letting remains in limbo. The council referred a planning proposal seeking to place a 90-day cap on non-hosted holiday letting more than a year ago. But the state planning department later asked for an economic analysis to accompany the proposal. The council voted in November to refer an amended proposal to the department for Gateway Determination. The changes involved the inclusion of precinct areas that permit non-hosted short term rental accommodation for 365 days in those areas that have already been taken up almost exclusively for STRA, and 90 days for those areas that have not .
