Northumberland County man alleges daughter committed suicide in jail due to inadequate staffing

WILLIAMSPORT – A Northumberland County man alleges that staffing at the county jail was inadequate and ineffective, leading to his daughter’s suicide when she found herself incarcerated at the facility on drug charges.

County awards $1 7 million in CARES funds

SUNBURY — The Northumberland County Commissioners on Thursday doled out more than $1.7 million in County Relief Block Grant (CRBG) funding through the federal CARES Act to municipalities, schools, businesses and nonprofit organizations. Commissioner Chair Sam Schiccatano said SEDA-COG accepted applications on behalf of the county from the entities applying for the funds. After SEDA-COG reviewed the applications to see if funding criteria was met, Schiccatano said the commissioners made the final decisions on how to award the funding. He noted that many municipalities received funding to replace radios and related equipment for police and fire personnel. This (pandemic) was a reason to improve communication, Schiccatano said. A lot of the radios that were replaced were old radios.

Outdoor recreation area gives to Valley communities

The AOAA donated $68,500 in June to the Northumberland County Commissioners, $15,000 in September to the Housing Authority of Northumberland County from the Fight the Blight benefit ride, $20,000 to Coal Township, $10,000 to Zerbe Township, $5,000 to Shamokin, $1,000 each to East Cameron and West Cameron townships and $500 to Mount Carmel Township. The AOAA spans or impacts each of the communities. UPDATE Montour, Union county offices closed today; Northumberland offices on delay

This morning, Northumberland County Commissioners announced all county offices will open two hours later and liberal leave is in place. Also this morning, Union County officials said all county government offices will be closed today, including the courthouse, the government center, the Mifflinburg Government Center and the Resource Center. Montour County offices are also closed today, according to chief clerk Holly Brandon.
