About 40 vendors from the south side of the storied mall must shutter their booths by Sunday after Novak Development, the owner of the plaza, announced in February it had reached a deal to extend the lease of only one of the mall’s two operators.

For the last two years, Discount Mall has been in the middle of a battle between its vendors and property owner Novak Development. Now, half of the mall’s vendors have until the end of this month to pack up and leave.

After more than two years of uncertainty, nearly half of the 150 vendors who make up the Discount Mall have been told they will be evicted.

Vendors from Little Village Discount Mall are upset over the new owner's plan to close one side of the mall, which would leave out nearly half of the center's merchants.

A crushing blow to the vendors at Little Village's Discount Mall, who were told by Alderman Byron Sigcho-Lopez that as many as half of them are at risk of losing their current locations.

Improvements to the mall are planned, including new roofs and facades, parking lot resurfacing, new landscaping, new lighting and an underground storm water detention system. 

Novak Development’s plan responds to neighborhood concerns that a redevelopment could ruin the mall’s unique character as a place for individual vendors.
