Chairperson of the Parliamentary Budget and Finance Committee, Gladys Ganda, has said the economic growth projections at 3.5 percent as contained in the mid-term budget statement presented on Friday February 26, 2021 by Minister of Finance Felix Mlusu have been “overstated”.
Ganda: The best thing the finance minister Mlusu should have done was to remain conservative with his projections.
Speaking in Parliament on Thursday, March 4, 2021 “to offer a few reflections as considered by Committee on Budget and Finance”, the Nsanje Lalanje legislator noted that despite the good rains in most parts of the country, the dry spell and the reported fall armyworm destruction of more than 860,000 hectares of the maize crop in some parts of the country coupled with the continued surge in Covid-19 would put this estimate in big doubt.

Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Member of Parliament for Nsanje Lalanje, who is also chairperson of Budget and Finance Committee of Parliament, Gladys Ganda, has said parliament must step up and play its oversight role to ensure that public funds are not being abused by people with ulterior agenda.

Ganda said this in reaction to revelations that the Department of Disaster Management Affairs (Dodma) is failing to account for money amounting to K6.2 billion meant to fight the Covid-19 pandemic that it received in October last year.

Member of Parliament (MP) for Nsanje Lalanje constituency Gladys Ganda has said the country has lost a very good person and steward of development in T/A Mbenje of Nsanje.

She was speaking when she gave a tearful and lurid eulogy for the fallen chief who succumbed to Covid-19 earlier in the morning of the same day at Kamuzu Central Hospital in Lilongwe.
Ganda described Gogo Mbenje as a visionary chief who was full of development plans for Nsanje Lalanje constituency and the whole Nsanje District.
“As MP, my job was always easy, and I have been performing wonderfully because of the guidance that I received from Gogo Mbenje. The late Mbenje was a very prayerful family man who loved his wife and children; he also loved his people and his country, Malawi. He was visionary, corrupt-free, passionate, selfless empathetic; development conscious and a man of high integrity,” lamented

The body of Senior Chief Mbenje of Nsanje has been buried at his headquarters with cries and tears from hundred villagers in disbelief.
The burial took place last evening at around 7 PM where scores of people flocked to pay their last respects to the late Senior Chief Mbenje who died in Lilongwe Wednesday morning after succumbing to Covid-19.
