A 13-year-old charged with murder is facing life behind bars for his alleged role in the killing of 17-year-old Nyheem Wright in an after-school assault.

The weekly meetings are meant to bring together school leaders with the NYPD to discuss safe passage programs, how the police can support schools after school, or how to respond when incidents occur, among other topics. 

While local organizations have launched a number of preventive programs and support services in their communities aimed at quelling the violence, they know there are no easy answers to getting a lid on the crisis. The run of recent violent episodes involving teenagers has magnified a longstanding problem.

The boy was with his mother when he turned himself in with two other teenagers and confessed to stabbing the victim.

The young suspect surrendered with his mother by his side to detectives at the 60th Precinct stationhouse on Sunday, police said.

A 13-year-old faces murder charges and a 14 and 15-year-old face gang assault charges in connection with the stabbing.

The 17-year-old victim was stabbed at the Rite Aid on January 20, and succumbed to his injuries the next day.
