A broad coalition of religious groups are urging a federal appeals court to protect an Apache sacred site in Arizona from one of the nation’s largest copper mines.

(RNS) — ‘It’s important that we unify, and we work together, and share the teachings to protect our sacred areas because once God, once our sacred and holy places are gone, we will no longer exist. Our religion will be gone forever,’ said one Native American activist.

<p>A federal appeals court will rehear Apache Stronghold's case against the United States to save the sacred site of Oak Flat, a 6.7-square-mile stretch of land east of Phoenix that a private venture is seeking to turn into an underground copper mine.</p> <p>The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals announced Nov. 17 that it will rehear the case in front of a full 11-judge court instead of the original three-judge panel.</p>

San Carlos Apache officials say the mine will destroy Oak Flat, a sacred tribal religious site on the Tonto National Forest.

(RNS) — ‘The government protects historical churches and other important religious landmarks, and our site deserves no less protection,’ Apache Stronghold founder Wendsler Nosie Sr. said.

A federal court said it will take another look at claims that the proposed Resolution Copper mine should be delayed because it sits on land sacred to the Apache and would violate their religious rights by destroying Oak Flat.
